Slots in BigQuery

A slot is a narrow opening, usually in something that can receive items such as coins or letters. The word is also used to refer to an assignment or position, such as a time slot on a calendar or schedule. The earliest use of the word was in the phrase “slot machine”, meaning an electromechanical device that accepts paper tickets or tokens and dispenses prizes according to a pre-programmed sequence, as described in an 1887 article by a British newspaper.

A slot may also be an opportunity or chance to do something. For example, a student may have a slot in an extracurricular activity, a job, or a volunteer position. Similarly, a person may have a slot in his or her life for a significant relationship. The meaning of the word can also be expanded to include a place in a system such as a school, a business, or a government bureaucracy.

In this context, the word slot is often used to refer to a pre-established amount of work or time that someone can do. For example, a school has a certain number of slots for each grade level that they can offer to students each year. When a student has a slot in the school, that means they can go to school all day, and the teacher will know that they have enough time to do their work without falling behind.

There are many different types of slot machines, and each one has its own special rules and odds of winning. In general, the more symbols that appear on a reel, the higher the chance of hitting the jackpot. The odds of winning a particular slot game are also determined by how much the machine pays out to its players. For example, some machines pay out 98-99 cents for every dollar that is inserted into them. Others may pay out less, or not at all.

Some modern slot machines are equipped with tilt switches, which will break or make a circuit if the machine is tilted or otherwise tampered with. This is to protect the machine from theft and to prevent people from tampering with the machine. Tilt switches are not used in all slot machines, but it is still a good idea to keep them away from children.

Slots in BigQuery

In BigQuery, slots are dynamically re-evaluated to ensure that queries get the capacity they need at any given point in time. This is done by assessing a query’s dynamic DAG and allocating, pausing, or re-allocating slots as needed. In addition, slot borrowing is used to reduce queued job delays and provide other benefits such as reduced tail latency.

When creating a new slot type, select the Allow synonyms checkbox to enable it. Then, in the slot type name field, enter a regular expression that matches entity values for which you want to create a slot. Click Add Slot to create the slot type. You can then map the slot type to an utterance using the Slots tab or the Utterance tab.
